Planes at the North Omaha Airport will give way to cars during the U.S. Senior Open golf championship.
All spectator parking for the July 8 to 14 tournament will be at the airport at 72nd Street and Bennington Road, less than three miles north of the Omaha Country Club.
Parking will be free and so will the shuttles that will take spectators to and from the tournament’s main entrance on 72nd Street.
The airport will be closed to flights during the tournament.
Senior Open organizers said their parking plan, formed in conjunction with the Omaha Police Department, is meant to make the tournament a good neighbor to the residents who live nearby. There are subdivisions to the south and east of the course.
Public parking will be banned around the course during tournament week. Spectators will not be allowed to walk through the surrounding neighborhoods to enter the championship, or be dropped off at the main entrance.
“We have been working closely with the championship staff for more than two years on the most effective parking and traffic plan to ensure the upmost safety of all attendees, as well as minimal impact on the local residents,” Deputy Chief David Baker said in a news release. “For that reason, we cannot allow on-street parking surrounding Omaha Country Club or foot traffic into the championship.”
Parking for those with a valid handicap placard also will be at the North Omaha Airport. Wheelchair-accessible shuttles will transport spectators from this lot to the championship’s main entrance.
Shuttles from the parking lots begin daily at 6:45 a.m. and end approximately one hour after play concludes. No transportation will be available back to the public parking areas after that time. At the main entrance will be admissions and will call, a merchandise pavilion and disabled services.
The airport is north of the 72nd Street exit on Interstate 680. Law enforcement and signage will direct spectators to the public parking lot.
Practice rounds for the U.S. Senior Open are July 8, 9 and 10. Championship rounds are July 11 to 14.
